Cohen has surveyed the area with archaeological teams, and led one survey expedition in 2003, and another in 2007 when a sealed cave was discovered. He led a dig in 2003 and another in 2006, which are documented here. More expeditions are planned, and Cohen is seeking both donations and volunteers to aid him to progress the search for these critical Jewish artefacts and scrolls. At present no government funding is available for this type of project, and the site is at risk of contamination by treasure-seekers while it remains incompletely explored. |
So far, many scientific indicators have been uncovered which point to the fact that there was priestly activity in the caves. A leather binder, traditionally used to enclose scrolls has been found. A pool at the entrance to one of the caves has been proved to be a Mikveh or ritual cleansing vessel, which would have been used by priests or scribes prior to touching sacred objects such as scrolls. In recent years Cohen completed his Phd with Haifa University. |
THESE CAVES CONTAIN VITAL INFORMATION, OF INTEREST TO MANY RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR GROUPS,
AND SHOULD BE FULLY EXPLORED URGENTLY
